Persian Wedding

Vida + Ed | Portland Wedding | Oregon Event Planning and Design | Aniko Productions

I've known Vida and her family for as long as I can remember, so when she asked me to help with planning her wedding to Ed, I was incredibly honored.  With a venue like the Portland Art Museum, our possibilities were endless.  Vida and Ed really wanted to showcase Vida's Iranian heritage and we definitely kept that in mind during the planning process. | Portland Wedding | Oregon Event Planning and Design | Aniko Productions

Their ceremony was performed by an Iranian-American officiant, Nilou Nouri (who also happens to be my talented cousin) who married the couple using not only Farsi, but also translated the ceremony in English as well.  Vida & Ed said their vows in front of the Sofreh, designed by yours truly, using pieces that Vida's grandmother had brought back from Iran specifically for the wedding as well as other items each symbolizing well wishes to the couple.

For the reception, guests made their way upstairs into the Kridel Ballroom, finding their seats with gold potted succulents which also acted as favors. Tables were set with lush navy linens, gold beaded chargers and gold chivaris. The room was uplit with amber lighting and a navy paisley gobo flanking the stage. A combination of tall and short floral arrangements by Amanda Karam Floral, included garden roses, hydrangeas, greenery and tons of candles.  Devil's Food provided a delicious Persian influenced dinner, everything from lamb kabobs, traditional wedding rice dishes, to salads and more. (SO GOOD!)

Vida really wanted to have a surprise element to her wedding and really give her guests something you don't typically see at a wedding, and she did not disappoint.  With the talented crew from AWOL dance who performed two separate acts during dinner, one on a silk and the other on the ring --both so outstanding, leaving everyone in awe. The most vivid memory of all was the look of pure joy on both Vida & Ed's face all evening, I have never seen a couple truly enjoy every single moment of their wedding day the way the two of them did.  It was so great to witness. It was an incredible evening and one for the books!

As a recent Persian bride I sincerely and whole-heartedly recommend Katy Haley from Bridal Bliss as a wedding planner!!! She’s very experienced and well skilled as a general wedding planner, but she really excels in providing support to those of us that come from all corners of the world. My wedding was a blended cultural wedding, a blend between my Persian family and my husband’s Protestant American family. Katy is sensitive to fulfilling your personalized cultural needs as a bride and groom, she’s also adept at supporting all family involved. She was willing, at all times, to be in contact with the mother and father of the bride (me). She understands that your wedding involves many important and influential family and friends, and she won’t hesitate in addressing their needs and desires, if needed too. With that said, she keeps the bride and groom’s desires, wishes, and dreams her top most priority. I was so relieved as a bride that Katy could take over, and dialogue with my family and please them, so that my husband and I could enjoy our wedding day fully and completely. You don’t need to listen to me tell you she’s wonderful; just listen to our wedding guests. Every Persian and non-Persian wedding guest said, “Our wedding was the best wedding they’ve been to in all their lives!!!” It felt simply wonderful that our wedding day was emotionally fulfilling for everyone: our family, our friends, and us, as bride and groom. Thank you sooo much Katy, we couldn’t have asked for a better wedding planner and better wedding day!!!

Mona + Shayan

Mona and Shayan were two of the best! Being from Portland originally, they both reside in the Bay area now, wanted to bring their family & guests back to their home in the PNW. They wanted to give their guests the full Portland experience with a Persian flare.

They landed on The Nines in downtown Portland. The night before guests were invited to sip on drinks up on the trendy rooftop of Departure and continued celebrating the next day in the Grand Ballroom at The Nines. The sofreh was decorated beautifully with floral from Floral Sunshine and an amazing spread of personal and family items covered the entire stage. An 8 ft’ wide aisle set the stage for Mona’s gorgeous gown along with floating candles in tall water vases.

Once Mona & Shayan said “I Do” it was time to party! Mona & Shayan opted to have a later dinner and have the guests engage in some dancing right after cocktail hour. It was fantastic to see everyone hop out of their seats and get their dance on so early in the night! The Nines, as usual, served amazing food with a fantastic drip cake to seal the deal. What a night celebrating Mona & Shayan -  Congrats you two!

We had the pleasure of working with Catherine Sammon on our wedding. We hired her as our day of the event coordinator but I feel like she was involved in every step of my planning. I can not describe how helpful she was and how calm she kept me (the bride) throughout the whole process. Given that we were planning our wedding long distance, she was truly God sent and all a bride needs. She was 100% reliable and knew what she was doing. She is an amazing listener and an easy person to work with. I was at times a bridezilla but she never made me feel that way. We are forever grateful to Catherine.

Nikki + Mahbodd | Portland Wedding | Oregon Event Planning and Design | George Street Photography

What do you get when two bright, happy, cultural families meet for a grand celebration of two college love birds??  The GORGEOUS wedding of Nikki & Mahbodd.  These two were an absolute pleasure to work with.  Both so happy to be planning together and excited to throw one heck of a party with all of their friends and family.  They were married at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic church in Lake Oswego.  With 12, yes 12, attendants on both sides, the church was filled to the brim with support for the couple.

Guests then traveled into Downtown Portland for a fabulous reception at The Sentinel Hotel's, Governor Ballroom. Sophisticated Floral decked out the room with stunning floral arrangements popping with purple and maroon dahlias. Guests snacked on traditional Persian sweets, made by the groom's family, while Event Team Entertainment  played a mix of pop and Persian hits!  This was such a wonderful day to be a part of and you better believe it went well into the night.  Congratulations Nikki and Mahbodd, I have no doubt you will live a long, happy life together!

Tahmiene + Colin | Willamette Valley Wedding | Oregon Wine Country Event Planning and Design | Robert J Hill Photography

WOW!! This is the first word I can think of when describing this wedding.  When you make the wine, and your family owns the venue, you know your wedding is going to be, well, WOW! Tahmiene Momtazi is the winemaker for Maysara Winery in McMinnville, OR. When she and fiancé Colin Smith got engaged last year, they knew that there was no question they wanted to be married at this stunning space.  Sister, Hanna Momtazi, is the venue coordinator and was there to help the couple bring their vision to life. | Willamette Valley Wedding | Oregon Wine Country Event Planning and Design | Robert J Hill Photography

Tahmiene’s father custom made some of the most stunning, natural-wood family tables I have ever laid eyes on. Bloomsberry floral brought in gorgeous greenery and even some grapes from the vineyard to tie the room together. The bride's family performed a beautiful Persian ceremony ("Aghd") in the mezzanine of the building with a traditional Sofreh.  After, guests mingled and snacked on appetizers from Pearl Catering.  An amazing spread of food followed for dinner, including traditional persian cuisine brought in from Pasha. To satisfy everyone's sweettooth, Lux Sucre provided 9 different cakes and other goodies for guests to try.  Paradox Productions was there spinning a mix of persian and pop music to keep the party going. This was an amazing, stylish, fun-filled day to be a part of.  Congratulations Tahmiene & Colin!

Susie + Nick

I love a wedding at Waverley Country Club.  They are always elegant and timeless and Susie & Nick's wedding was nothing short of that.  With a beautiful ceremony that took place inside the ballroom, Susie and Nick walked down an aisle filled with flowers and floating candles to say their vows atop a white stage that was adorned with florals around the base. Susie wore a beautiful lace Reem Acra gown with her bridesmaids in berry Monique Lhuillier floor length gowns while Nick and the groomsmen wore tuxedos from The Black Tux.  After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d' oeuvres on the back patio while also enjoying some persian sweets, an homage to Susie's maternal side's heritage.

For dinner guests made their way into the dining room where they sat amongst a combination of long and round tables with champagne linens, glass gold beaded chargers and beautiful ivory & blush arrangements with pops of greenery.  Guests enjoyed a slice from the stunning four-tiered cake full of gorgeous blooms between each layer for dessert decorated by Papa Haydn along with some additional Persian pastries by Bon Bon Bakery.  The ceremony space was transformed into a dancing area with live music and custom sunglasses as a favor.  In perfect fashion, Nick & Susie exited the club with a glow-stick send off in Nick's 1984 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper.  Epic end to an epic evening!

Shaadi + Nate

These two were literally the lucky winners of the Lucky in Love Contest held by local Portland Professionals. Shaadi and Nate were one of the most fun-loving and kind couples of my season. They truly wanted every guest to feel accommodated and loved. Their blending of Persian and American cultures couldn't have shined brighter. Shaadi's family designed the traditional Persian Sofreh that sparkled in the Oregon Golf Club's gardens as well as hand cut all of the traditional fruits and pastries. A Jenga guest book, tons of mirrors, candles and gold frames completed the romantic and fun setting. Such a special night!

Yassi + Ali

Yassi & Ali’s entire wedding design scheme was inspired by a dress that Yassi loved.  She loved the way it looked and she loved the richness of the color.  From there we worked with Geranium Lake to translate it all into a gorgeous wedding!  This couple was incredibly thoughtful in choosing each of their vendors and working on details to ensure that the event had a “wow factor.”  Ali owns ABC JEWELRY downtown, so I can sure you that the jewels were out of this world!

Sasha + Jahan | Portland Wedding Planner | Oregon Event Design | Jos Studios

Sasha & Jahan had a beautiful Persian wedding at WAVERLEY COUNTRY CLUB last September.  They planned their event from California and worked with KATY and EMILY to fine tune all the details.  We absolutely love infusing culture, family traditions and personalty into weddings.  Congrats Sasha & Jahan!

A traditional Persian wedding ceremony, or Aghd, involves a spread known as the Sofreh.  This Sofreh is filled with eggs, sweets, nuts, and several other items that each represent a wish for the couple.  Eggs for fertility, desserts for a sweet life and so on.  I love all the symbolism–so meaningful! Part of the wedding ceremony involves all of the happily married women in the room holding a beautiful cloth over the couple’s heads.  They then rub large sugar cubes together above the bride and groom to shower their marriage with blessings.  The ceremony ends with the bride and groom feeding each other sweet honey with their pinkies.
